The Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) has taken up renovation of the ancient Virupaksha temple at Hampi.
To start with, the authorities are giving a facelift to the gopura at the main entrance of the temple on the eastern side, known as “Bishtappaiah gopura”.
According to the rejuvenation proposal, the stucco of the temple that has withered over the years will be repaired and the gopura will be given a colour wash. Work of erecting scaffoldings at the main entrance is under way and the actual repair work is likely to commence in a couple of days.
Subsequently, the gopuras at two other entrances will be repaired. Work on all the gopuras is likely to be completed in three or four months. Renovation of other portions of the temple will be taken up afterwards, ASI sources said.
